The children's playground at Espaço Monsanto, in Lisbon, is the first facility in Portugal to receive Corkeen, an innovative retained fall protection system for playgrounds made of natural cork, developed, and produced by Amorim.
Located in the largest Portuguese forest park, the playground has about 90 m2 and has been completely remodeled following the award of European Green Capital 2020 to the city of Lisbon. This is the first time that a southern European capital has won this distinction.
In this context, all used materials in the playground renovation project were selected taking into account their environmental credentials.
The existing wooden fence around the playground was subject to renovation works and kept there. New equipment was also installed, whose choice took into account the sustainable origin of the wood used in its manufacture and the possibility of being able to be used by children of all ages and abilities, promoting healthy and inclusive moments of fun.
Floor-wise, the SBR rubber panels were replaced by the Corkeen system, which combines safety, accessibility, and sustainability in a single solution. Since cork is a natural insulator, it reduces the surface temperature by more than 20% compared to synthetic solutions. A particularly important feature in a city with so many sunny days, such as Lisbon.

Corkeen Play Original was installed in situ by Fernando L. Gaspar, Corkeen Brand Master for the Portuguese market. The system is applied in two layers, a shock absorbing base layer and a wear-resistant top layer.
